Major Drug Bust in Northeast India: DRI Seizes 50 Kg of Methamphetamine, Four Arrested
The DRI has seized 50 kg of methamphetamine in Northeast India, arresting four individuals involved in the drug trafficking network.

Aizawl, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has made a significant breakthrough against international drug trafficking in Northeast India. In two separate operations conducted in Mizoram and Assam, officials seized 50 kilograms of methamphetamine, which included 30 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets (known as yaba) and 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.
In these operations, four individuals were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985. Additionally, three vehicles used in the trafficking were confiscated.
The DRI received specific intelligence indicating that multiple drug shipments were being sent from Zokhawthar towards Aizawl and Silchar. Acting on this information, DRI officials, with assistance from the Assam Rifles, intercepted a Mahindra Bolero camper vehicle on the Aizawl-Champhai road on October 29, 2026.
During a thorough search of the vehicle, authorities discovered 30 brick-shaped packets containing pink-orange pills hidden inside a specially constructed compartment within an office desk. The total weight of this haul was 30 kilograms.
According to the DRI, hiding drugs within furniture represents a new tactic employed by traffickers, allowing vehicles to appear as if they are carrying ordinary household or office items, thereby misleading investigative agencies.
The following day, on October 30, DRI officials, aided by the Assam Rifles, acted on another tip-off and stopped an Ashok Leyland truck and another Bolero camper about 40 kilometers from Silchar in Dholai. During the search of the truck, 20 packets of crystal methamphetamine, weighing a total of 20 kilograms, were found concealed above the driver’s cabin. The traffickers had disguised these packets within tea packages bearing foreign labels to evade suspicion.
Initial investigations and on-site tests confirmed the presence of amphetamine in the seized substances. The DRI’s preliminary findings suggest that the drugs were smuggled from Myanmar into India.
This operation comes on the heels of recent DRI seizures of 232 kilograms and 56 kilograms of methamphetamine in the Northeast region. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to identify others connected to this international trafficking network.
