Maharashtra Implements Euthanasia and Advance Directive Rules in Hospitals

Mumbai, July 17: The Maharashtra government has made a significant decision to protect the rights of seriously ill patients. The state has issued an order to implement rules regarding euthanasia and advance directives in both public and private hospitals. A committee has been formed to establish the necessary procedures and oversee these cases.
The government states that the aim of this decision is to ensure patients’ “right to die with dignity.” Consequently, all private hospitals in the state will now be required to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Supreme Court.
An advance directive is a legal document that allows individuals to specify their wishes regarding medical treatment in the event they become seriously ill with no chance of recovery. In such cases, decisions about continuing or halting life-sustaining treatment will be made following a defined legal process.
The state government believes that this system will create a uniform procedure in both public and private hospitals. It will respect patients’ previously recorded wishes and ensure that decisions related to treatment in the final stages of life are made transparently and legally.
The government has stated that this step will enhance the protection of patients’ rights. Additionally, it will guarantee that severely ill individuals can face the final stages of life with dignity.
This decision aligns with the Supreme Court’s directives, which have clarified that the wishes of patients suffering from serious and incurable illnesses must be respected.
