Madhya Pradesh Launches 139-Day Water Conservation Campaign

Indore, March 19: Madhya Pradesh has officially launched its water conservation initiative for the third consecutive year on Gudi Padwa. This year’s campaign, known as the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan, will run for 139 days until Ganga Dussehra.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the campaign at the ISKCON temple in Indore. He emphasized that this initiative is a tribute to our ancient culture and the sacredness of water. “Water is essential for life. The human body is composed of five elements, and none can exist alone. Life cannot be imagined without water,” he stated.

Yadav highlighted that Madhya Pradesh is the origin of over 250 rivers. The sacred waters of the Narmada River flow not only through Madhya Pradesh but also into Gujarat. The benefits of the river-linking projects extend to neighboring states like Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The campaign aims to enhance water resources across the country, with significant investments planned for water conservation activities at all levels, including assembly, urban bodies, and panchayats.

In this year’s campaign, activities will be conducted for three months, with an allocated budget of ₹2,500 crores. The previous years saw the campaign running for 30 days and then 120 days, respectively.

During the event, Chief Minister Yadav also launched development projects worth ₹22 crores, including the renovation of Bilawali Talab, Limbodi Talab, and Chhota Sirpur Talab, with costs of ₹12.72 crores, ₹4.89 crores, and ₹3.82 crores, respectively.

He urged attendees to pledge against water wastage and to collect every drop, reinforcing the mantra, “Water is life; if there is water, there is a future.” Yadav noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, water conservation has become a national campaign, with the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan being a significant part of this effort. In recent years, numerous water structures have been developed across the state.

Referring to Indore, he mentioned that in the first year of the campaign, the municipal corporation undertook extensive work on the deepening and restoration of old stepwells and ponds, along with the renovation of hundreds of wells. He called on citizens to actively participate in water conservation, stating that this campaign should be a movement for everyone, not just the government.
