Bhopal, May 11: The Madhya Pradesh government has officially ordered a judicial inquiry into the tragic cruise accident at the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, which claimed the lives of at least 13 people earlier this month.
To lead this inquiry, the state administration has formed a one-member commission headed by retired High Court judge Sanjay Dwivedi. The commission has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation and is expected to submit its report to the government within three months.
According to a notification issued by the General Administration Department under Additional Secretary Dinesh Kumar Maurya, the commission is responsible for identifying the exact causes of the accident. A key aspect of the inquiry will be to determine the accountability of individuals and officials whose negligence may have contributed to this disaster.
Additionally, the commission will review the effectiveness of the rescue and relief operations conducted during and immediately after the incident. Beyond the specifics of the Bargi Dam tragedy, the state government has empowered the commission to conduct a comprehensive audit of all boats, cruises, and water sports activities currently operating in Madhya Pradesh.
This safety audit will assess whether vessels comply with the mandatory certification and safety protocols outlined in the Inland Vessels Act of 2021 and the Boat Safety Guidelines of 2017. A long-term goal of this inquiry is to establish standardized operating procedures for all water-based recreational activities in the state to prevent such accidents in the future.
The judicial inquiry was initiated following the formation of a four-member committee, which was previously asked to submit its report within 15 days. Initial investigations have indicated serious negligence at multiple administrative levels. This tragedy resulted in the deaths of eight women, four children, and one man, raising significant concerns about safety standards at popular tourist destinations.
The commission must complete its investigation and submit its final report within 90 days of the notification published in the Madhya Pradesh Gazette, ensuring timely justice for the victims and their families.
