Macron Condemns US Tariff Threats on Greenland, Vows United European Response

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly objected to the United States’ tariff threats concerning Greenland. He clearly stated that such threats are unacceptable and warned that if these measures are implemented, European countries will respond in a united and coordinated manner.

President Macron expressed on the social media platform ‘X’, “France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of countries in Europe and other parts of the world. This guides our decisions and forms the basis of our commitment to the United Nations and its charter. On this foundation, we support Ukraine and will continue to do so. We have formed an alliance of countries willing to defend these principles and ensure strong and lasting peace. Based on this, we decided to participate in exercises held in Greenland by Denmark. We fully take responsibility for this decision because the security of the Arctic region and Europe’s external borders is at stake.”

He further added, “When faced with challenges, no threat or pressure will influence us — neither in Ukraine, Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world.”

Macron reaffirmed, “Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. If implemented, European countries will respond with unity and coordination. We will ensure that European sovereignty remains intact. With this spirit, I will discuss the matter with my European partners.”

This statement from Macron came in response to US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Saturday that from February 1, the United States would impose a 10 percent tariff on goods coming from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland related to Greenland, increasing it to 25 percent by early June.

Greenland is the world’s largest island and a self-governing territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, where defense and foreign policy are controlled by Copenhagen. The US also maintains a military base on the island. Since returning to power in 2025, Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his interest in acquiring Greenland.
