Miami, October 24 (Daily Kiran) — Football icon Lionel Messi has signed a new three-year contract extension with Inter Miami, committing his future to the Major League Soccer (MLS) club until 2028. The announcement came just a day before Miami’s playoff opener.

Inter Miami, currently placed third in the Eastern Conference, will host Nashville on Friday in the first match of a three-game playoff series.
Expressing his happiness, Messi said,
“I’m very happy to continue here and be part of this project, which has turned from a dream into a beautiful reality — playing at Miami Freedom Park. Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve felt great joy, and I’m excited to keep building on this journey.”
The contract extension is seen as a major boost not only for Inter Miami but also for the MLS, as Messi continues to elevate the league’s global visibility.
Messi, who was named MLS Most Valuable Player (MVP) last season, remains a strong contender for the same title this year. If he wins again, he will become only the second player in MLS history to earn the award twice, and the first ever to win it in consecutive seasons.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s influence on and off the pitch, saying,
“Watching Messi play and enjoy his football is incredible. He’s a true competitor who inspires everyone around him. When we execute our plans well, success naturally follows.”
In the ongoing season, Messi has scored 29 goals and provided 19 assists, taking his total goal contributions to 48, just one short of the all-time MLS record of 49 set by Carlos Vela in 2019. He also set new milestones by becoming the first player to score multiple goals in five consecutive matches and the record holder for 10 multi-goal games in a single season.
At 38 years old, this is expected to be Messi’s final professional contract. He began his illustrious career with FC Barcelona in 2004 at the age of 17, leading the club to numerous titles over 17 seasons.
After guiding Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Messi ended his stint with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and joined Inter Miami in 2023.
Since then, Messi has appeared in 82 matches for Miami, scoring 71 goals and providing 27 assists, helping the club win both the Leagues Cup and the MLS Supporters’ Shield.
