
Jammu, March 28: The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, directed a large-scale crackdown on drug trafficking networks targeting the region’s youth during a high-level meeting held at the Lok Bhawan in Jammu on Saturday.
Sinha reviewed the progress of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ (Drug-Free India Campaign) and emphasized the deliberate and malicious efforts to push the youth of Jammu and Kashmir into the quagmire of addiction. He called for a comprehensive government approach that combines strict enforcement, robust preventive measures, and a carefully crafted multi-dimensional action plan to eliminate the entire drug trafficking and narco-terrorism network.
He urged for ‘Jan Bhagidari’ (public participation) to achieve the goal of making Jammu and Kashmir drug-free, along with a coordinated response against substance abuse.
The meeting discussed five key areas: law enforcement, information, education and communication, counseling, treatment, and rehabilitation. It also included the establishment of a stringent social media monitoring system to counter false narratives.
The Lieutenant Governor instructed officials to implement preventive measures in a mission mode, particularly within educational institutions. He also directed the identification and strict punishment of any remaining elements of the narco-terror network within the system.
Sinha stressed the importance of encouraging citizens to report cases related to drug addiction and trafficking to the police and the Union Territory administration. He reviewed preparations by all relevant departments for an upcoming intensive drug awareness campaign in Jammu and Kashmir.
He stated, “Religious leaders, social organizations, ex-servicemen, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, Scouts and Guides, and political leaders should be involved in the fight against drug addiction.”
The Lieutenant Governor also instructed an evaluation of the activities conducted under the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ over the past year.
The meeting included discussions on integrating all districts into the drug-free Jammu and Kashmir portal, appointing nodal officers, ongoing community outreach programs, training and capacity building, strengthening and expanding de-addiction infrastructure and human resources, operating de-addiction facilities, implementing a de-addiction registry portal, standard operating procedures, and activities conducted by relevant departments.
Sinha directed senior officials to prioritize the vibrant village program with special attention to the inclusive development of border villages.
Present at the meeting were Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, DGP Nalin Prabhat, Additional Chief Secretary of the Finance Department Shailendra Kumar, Principal Secretary (Home) Chandrakant Bharti, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor Mandeep K. Bhandari, Commissioner Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Department M. Raju, Administrative Secretary, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, and other senior officials.
