New Delhi, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Swiss President Guy Parmelin is set to arrive in New Delhi today for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit, taking place from October 5 to 7, aims to strengthen cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, and mobility.
Accompanying President Parmelin is a high-level delegation of senior officials and business leaders. This marks his first official visit to India, although it is his second trip this year; he previously attended the AI Impact Summit in February 2026.
During his time in India, President Parmelin will engage in bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Modi. They will review the progress of collaboration across several areas, including trade, investment, science, technology, and cultural exchanges. The two leaders will also share insights on regional and global issues, along with discussions on enhancing cooperation on international platforms.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the bilateral talks are scheduled for October 5. The discussions will cover advancements in various sectors and the ongoing cooperation between the two nations.
Additionally, President Parmelin will meet with President Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in his honor. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is also expected to meet with the Swiss President.
This visit is particularly significant as President Parmelin will participate in the second India-EFTA Prosperity Summit on October 7. This event commemorates the first anniversary of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).
The Ministry emphasized Switzerland’s importance as an economic partner, noting that it is India’s largest trade and investment partner among the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries. The longstanding friendly relations between India and Switzerland have been underscored, with regular high-level meetings playing a crucial role in advancing their bilateral ties.
The visit comes at a time of sustained high-level engagement between the two countries. The last official visit by an Indian President to Switzerland occurred in 2019, while Prime Minister Modi made official trips to Switzerland in 2016 and 2018.
