Kulgam, August 11 – The anti-terror operation in the Akhal forests of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered its 11th day on Monday, with security forces tightening the cordon to prevent militants from escaping under the cover of heavy gunfire. Officials said this is among the longest anti-terror operations in the Valley in recent years.

So far, two Army personnel have lost their lives and nine others have been injured in the operation. Two militants were killed in the initial phase of the encounter.
According to officials, eight militants are believed to be hiding at three different locations within the forest area. They avoid firing during the day but resort to heavy gunfire at night in an attempt to break the cordon. The Akhal forest is dense, with numerous natural caves that provide cover for the militants.
Security forces are deploying drones and helicopters to track their movements, while Para Commandos are assisting in eliminating the hiding militants.
The encounter began on August 1 after security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence about militant presence in the forest. The identities and affiliation of the slain militants have yet to be confirmed.
Senior police and Army officials, including Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat and Northern Army Commander Lt. Gen. Prateek Sharma, are closely monitoring the operation round the clock.
