KKR Aimed to Retain Experienced Players: Head Coach Abhishek Nayar

Mumbai, 5 January: Following the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directive, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have released Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the team. KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar shared that the franchise’s strategy during the auction was to bring experienced players on board.

Abhishek Nayar said, “We wanted to join hands with experienced players. Alongside, we aimed to include the best available Indian players in the auction. Cricket is about the players, not the coach. The team must play unitedly. If the team plays together, it will deliver excellent performances. This team has produced some of the finest players for India.”

The former Indian cricketer added, “Our approach is clear. We will try to play good cricket. Whenever you step into a tournament, the mindset should always be to win. We will keep track of each player’s form and continuously strive for outstanding performances.”

Abhishek Nayar believes that it is enough if players meet their own expectations. He remarked, “As long as our players are playing well and are happy with their game, that is sufficient for me. We want our players to fulfil their hopes and enjoy their cricket.”

KKR had acquired Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore in the IPL 2026 auction but have now released him. This move has caused discontent in Bangladesh, where the government has ordered an indefinite ban on IPL broadcasting and promotions.

KKR’s retained players for IPL 2026 include Ajinkya Rahane, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Anukul Roy, Harshit Rana, Manish Pandey, Ramandeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, Umran Malik, Vaibhav Arora, and Varun Chakravarthy.

Players bought in the auction are Rahul Tripathi (₹75 lakh), Finn Allen (₹2 crore), Tejaswi Singh (₹3 crore), Tim Seifert (₹1.5 crore), Cameron Green (₹25.20 crore), Sarthak Ranjan (₹30 lakh), Daksh Kamra (₹30 lakh), Rachin Ravindra (₹2 crore), Prashant Solanki (₹30 lakh), Matheesha Pathirana (₹18 crore), Kartik Tyagi (₹30 lakh), and Akash Deep (₹1 crore).
