Kiren Rijiju Criticizes Disrespect Towards President Murmu During West Bengal Visit

New Delhi, March 8: Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju has responded sharply to the controversy surrounding President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to West Bengal. He stated that the office of the President transcends politics. The challenges faced by President Murmu are not just unfortunate for West Bengal but for the entire nation.

Kiren Rijiju took to the social media platform X to express his views, saying, “It is extremely unfortunate for the entire country that our first tribal President, Mrs. Droupadi Murmu, has had to experience such distress. The position of the President is beyond politics and symbolizes the highest constitutional dignity of the nation.”

Earlier, Rijiju shared a video of President Murmu’s address, stating, “I have always been proud to be tribal and Indian. The shameful act by the Chief Minister of West Bengal has hurt my pride. Disrespecting a tribal woman who holds the office of President of India is an affront to tribal pride and an attack on the Constitution of India.”

This comment came after President Murmu expressed her displeasure over the last-minute change of the venue for the Santhal Conference in Darjeeling district. Although President Murmu arrived in the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad’s Phansidewa area, neither the Chief Minister nor any minister was present to welcome her, as per protocol.

Moreover, the President was supposed to attend an event in Bidhannagar, Siliguri, but the West Bengal administration reportedly denied permission for the event, citing security concerns. Consequently, the organizers had to shift the program to a smaller venue in Ghoshpur.

Addressing the audience, President Murmu remarked that the International Santhal Conference was significant. Upon arriving, she realized that it would have been better if the conference had been held in a larger area, as it could accommodate a substantial crowd. She expressed confusion over the administration’s decision, stating, “I don’t know what was on the administration’s mind. They said this place is crowded, but I believe five lakh people could have easily gathered here. I don’t understand why they moved us away from that location.”

The President further commented that when the President visits a place, the Chief Minister and ministers should also attend, but they did not. “I am also a daughter of Bengal. Didi Mamata is like my sister, my younger sister. I don’t know if she was upset with me, which is why this happened,” she added.
