Seoul, March 27: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held a summit with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Pyongyang. During this meeting, both leaders signed a treaty aimed at fostering friendship and cooperation. This information was reported by North Korea’s state media on Friday.
Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, arrived in North Korea for a two-day official visit at Kim Jong-un’s invitation. He stated that the bilateral relations between Pyongyang and Minsk have entered a new phase.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim Jong-un and Lukashenko also signed several agreements in areas such as diplomacy, agriculture, public health, and more. KCNA reported that both leaders expressed satisfaction and confidence that their cooperative relationship would expand and develop in a manner that serves the interests of their people.
Earlier, on March 26, Kim Jong-un welcomed President Lukashenko in Pyongyang. This marked Lukashenko’s first official visit to North Korea.
A ceremony was held on Wednesday at Kim Il Sung Square to welcome Lukashenko, who arrived on his private plane for the two-day visit at Kim’s invitation.
Both North Korea and Belarus have supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Pyongyang has sent troops and weapons, while Minsk has allowed Moscow to use its territory for the invasion.
Alongside Kim Jong-un, Lukashenko also paid tribute at the ‘Liberation Tower’ in Pyongyang. This tower commemorates the Soviet soldiers whom North Korea claims helped liberate Korea from Japanese colonial rule between 1910 and 1945. The two leaders observed a moment of silence in honor of the fallen soldiers.
During this visit, Lukashenko was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko and ministers from the foreign affairs, public health, education, and industry ministries.
