Kerala Launches Monthly Disease Prevention Calendar to Boost Public Awareness
Kerala introduces a monthly calendar for disease prevention, enhancing public health awareness through door-to-door outreach by health workers.

Thiruvananthapuram, October 23 (Daily Kiran) : The Kerala government, led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, has adopted a calendar-based approach to combat infectious diseases. Health workers, including inspectors, will visit homes across the state to raise awareness and promote preventive measures.
Health Minister K. Muraleedharan unveiled the calendar on Friday at the secretariat. This initiative marks the first time the health department has created such a document aimed at preventing disease outbreaks and fatalities.
Muraleedharan noted that a previous order from the administration led by Pinarayi Vijayan restricted health workers to provide information only in areas where disease outbreaks were reported. He stated that this order will be revised to allow for broader preventive measures.
The initiative aims to shift the focus from emergency responses to proactive disease prevention. By providing information relevant to various diseases throughout the year, the government seeks to prepare the public in advance.
Experts from a high-level committee established by the health department developed the calendar. It includes monthly information on diseases pertinent to Kerala, detailing symptoms, transmission methods, and preventive actions individuals and communities can take.
Muraleedharan emphasized that effective prevention and treatment require coordinated efforts from the health department, other government agencies, and the public. This calendar is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to lead such coordinated initiatives.
The calendar will be made available to the public across the state and published on the department’s official website. This initiative acknowledges that while scientific knowledge can help identify disease spread patterns, such information often does not reach the public, potentially undermining community preparedness and preventive efforts.
The minister reiterated that preventing the spread of diseases and avoiding fatalities is a primary responsibility of the department.
