Tiruvananthapuram, February 2: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman demanding a judicial inquiry into the unnatural death of CJ Roy during an income tax raid on January 30.
In his letter, CM Vijayan expressed the deep sorrow felt by the people of Kerala over Roy’s death. He noted that the business community and civil society are shocked by the incident. He wrote, “This unfortunate event is a blot on the country’s tax administration, which is meant to guide and assist using data without interference. However, in some cases, intervention may be necessary, but extreme caution must be exercised at the start and end of such actions.”
The Chief Minister raised several questions about the raid’s conduct. According to reports, a lack of necessary caution may have led to the loss of an entrepreneur’s valuable life. Vijayan said it was surprising that Roy, who was being searched by the income tax department, reportedly took his own life with a licensed firearm while the officers were conducting the operation.
He added that the person subject to a search has certain rights that officials must respect, along with duties that must be fulfilled. During any search, the person named in the warrant should remain present, and at least two independent witnesses should be there according to procedure.
CM Vijayan also pointed out that if media reports are accurate, Roy had moved to another room and shot himself while the search was ongoing elsewhere in the building.
CJ Roy, founder and chairman of the Confident Group, allegedly died by suicide at his Bengaluru office on January 30. He was a prominent real estate developer known for his luxury lifestyle and high-profile business ventures.
