Thiruvananthapuram, February 12: The Kerala government has approved a new initiative, the ‘Women’s Policy 2026’, aimed at ensuring comprehensive gender justice. Health and Women and Child Development Minister Veena George announced that the state cabinet has granted approval for this revised policy.
This policy is believed to be the first of its kind introduced by any state, establishing an inclusive and equality-based framework to safeguard the dignity and welfare of senior citizens.
The significance of this policy is heightened by the fact that the elderly population in the state is steadily increasing, currently comprising 16.5% of the total population. This figure is projected to rise to 23% by 2036.
According to Minister Veena George, the plan was developed by an 11-member Gender Council established under the Women and Child Development Department. Prior to finalizing the plan, nine meetings were held, a seminar took place, and consultations were conducted with 72 subject experts across eight key topics. Additionally, feedback was gathered from approximately 300 women across three different sectors.
The primary objective of the new Women’s Policy 2026 is to eliminate discrimination based on caste, religion, and gender, ensuring equal participation of women in all areas of society. The policy emphasizes equal representation of women in governance, legislative bodies, and decision-making committees.
Furthermore, concrete steps will be taken to promote gender justice in employment, education, and healthcare services. The policy also aims to provide special protection for elderly women, strengthen existing mechanisms to prevent violence against women, and address the challenges posed by changing demographic trends.
Provisions for strict action against online hate and cyber harassment have also been included. Recommendations from the Hema Committee will be implemented to ensure a safe and conducive environment for women in the cinema and media sectors.
Minister Veena George stated that a state gender monitoring committee, chaired by the Chief Minister, will oversee the implementation of the policy. Additionally, a gender resource person will be appointed in each government department to ensure effective execution.
