Bengaluru, April 10: Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara expressed confidence on Friday that the Congress party will secure victories in the state’s two assembly by-elections. He emphasized that there should be no doubt about the party’s success.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Parameshwara acknowledged reports of low voter turnout in Davanagere South and Bagalkot but remained optimistic about winning both seats. He noted that voting patterns differ between general elections and by-elections, predicting favorable results for Congress.
Voting for the by-elections in Karnataka concluded peacefully on Thursday, with over 68% turnout reported in both constituencies. According to official figures from the Election Commission, Bagalkot saw a voter turnout of 68.65%, while Davanagere South recorded 68.43%.
For the Davanagere South by-election, Congress has fielded Samarth Mallikarjun, while the BJP has nominated Srinivas T. Dasakariyappa. The officer Kodape is contesting as a candidate for the Social Democratic Party of India. In Bagalkot, Umesh Meti is representing Congress against BJP’s Veeranna Charantimath.
Parameshwara stated that the final decision regarding internal reservations will be made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He mentioned that discussions on this issue could take place in regular cabinet meetings or special sessions, ensuring no community faces injustice before a final decision is reached.
Responding to rumors about “zombie drugs,” the Home Minister dismissed these claims as baseless. He explained that the individual in question is a truck driver who had come from northern states like Haryana or Punjab in search of work. Reports suggest that he consumed alcohol mixed with medication for an illness, leading to unusual behavior.
Parameshwara clarified that no criminal case has been filed regarding this incident. He added that the Bengaluru Police Commissioner informed him that there is no evidence supporting the use of any “zombie drugs.”
He also mentioned that the person who spread these claims on social media has been questioned and admitted to intentionally posting the information.
Regarding the alleged shortage of LPG cylinders, the Home Minister stated that the concerned department is working to resolve the issue. The state government has written to the central government regarding supply allocations. He expressed hope for a quick resolution, suggesting that potential ceasefires and shipping movements from the Gulf region could help restore supply and alleviate shortages.
