New Delhi, March 9: In a recent address in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, the leader of the House, sharply criticized the opposition for what he termed as irresponsible behavior. He expressed disappointment, stating that the opposition seems uninterested in the nation’s welfare or serious discussions.
Nadda accused the opposition of aiming solely to create chaos in the House. This statement came as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was providing updates on the situation arising from the Iran-Israel conflict and the safety of Indian citizens in various Middle Eastern countries. During this crucial briefing, significant disruptions occurred in the House.
Despite the uproar, the External Affairs Minister delivered his statement. The opposition not only chanted slogans but also staged a walkout from the session. Following this, Nadda took aim at the opposition, noting that Jaishankar had elaborately discussed the current conditions in West Asia. He clarified how the government is managing the crisis and addressing various challenges.
Nadda highlighted that the questions raised by the opposition regarding energy security were also addressed in detail. He assured that the government remains vigilant and proactive, continuously monitoring the situation while prioritizing the needs of the Indian populace.
He pointed out that the opposition leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, was given the opportunity to speak under Rule 176 of the Rajya Sabha but chose to divert the discussion to unrelated topics. Despite knowing that the External Affairs Minister was set to provide comprehensive information, Kharge attempted to derail the conversation. Nadda noted that the opposition has a history of creating disturbances during serious discussions instead of participating.
For instance, during the debate on electoral reforms in December 2025, the opposition walked out just as the government was about to respond after 16-18 hours of debate. Similarly, in August 2025, when discussions were held regarding India’s space program and the role of Indian astronauts in the International Space Station, the opposition chose not to engage. This pattern continued during discussions on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam incidents, where the opposition left just as Home Minister Amit Shah was to respond. The same occurred during the budget discussions when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stood to reply.
Nadda condemned the opposition’s behavior as highly irresponsible and deserving of strong condemnation. He emphasized that the record clearly shows the opposition’s lack of interest in national interests. They seem disinterested in India’s development, self-reliance, or progress. Their focus appears to be solely on political gain, but under Narendra Modi’s leadership, the nation will continue to advance.
