Washington, April 9: US Vice President JD Vance will depart for Islamabad this weekend after concluding his visit to Hungary. He will lead a high-level American delegation for talks with Iran. This visit comes as Washington seeks to strengthen a fragile ceasefire established after recent military tensions. The Trump administration is intensifying diplomatic efforts to transform this ceasefire into lasting peace.
The White House announced on Wednesday that the delegation will include Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. This indicates that the administration aims to advance a structured diplomatic process following the recent escalation.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt informed reporters, “I can announce that the President is sending his team to Islamabad for talks this weekend, led by Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Witkoff, and Mr. Kushner.” She added, “The first round of these talks will take place on Saturday.”
While speaking to the media during his return from Hungary, Vance emphasized that parallel diplomatic discussions between Pakistan and Iran were already planned. “We have a conversation that is set to begin this weekend. That is true. I believe it is a positive step,” he stated.
These discussions follow a two-week ceasefire announced by President Donald Trump after “Operation Epic Fury.” The government claims this ceasefire has significantly diminished Iran’s military capabilities.
Press Secretary Levitt remarked, “This is a victory for America made possible by the President and our formidable military.” According to the White House, the pressure from military operations compelled Tehran to agree to the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
She noted, “Due to the President’s increasing pressure and the successes of Operation Epic Fury, the Iranian government requested a ceasefire proposal and ultimately agreed to it.”
Vance explained that the ceasefire framework is conditional. It involves both a ceasefire and a negotiation process. “We give something on our side and expect them to reopen the sea routes in return,” he said, warning that failure to comply with these conditions could have consequences.
Despite diplomatic efforts, the government has cautioned that the ceasefire remains unstable. Levitt stated, “It is a fragile ceasefire. Ceasefires are inherently delicate.”
Vance clarified that Iran’s nuclear program will be central to the agenda in Islamabad. “We want Iran to be unable to produce nuclear weapons. We want Iran to abandon nuclear fuel,” he asserted.
Levitt reiterated that the President’s conditions, which include the complete cessation of uranium enrichment in Iran, remain unchanged.
Meanwhile, Vance dismissed media reports regarding Iran’s proposals, stating, “Three different ten-point proposals were presented, but the first was immediately rejected.”
He emphasized that Washington believes Tehran is now engaging in talks with greater seriousness. “What is happening on the ground in Iran is that the government’s position is clear: it wants to negotiate with America,” he concluded.
