Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is under scrutiny for a campaign ad featuring the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton. The ad provoked strong backlash, including condemnation from within his own party.

The ad includes Acton’s mother, Donna Arthur, who claims that Acton has lied about her past. Arthur states, “Amy has a serious problem, she is a liar. She lies about her past,” in a segment deemed exploitative given Acton’s history of childhood abuse.

Acton’s campaign responded by reiterating details of her traumatic past, revealing that she was sexually abused by her stepfather and removed from her mother’s custody as a child. Acton called the ad “horrible and hideous,” labeling it a “sad” and “exploitative” tactic amid sharp personal attacks in the race.

While prominent Republicans like Vice President JD Vance defended Ramaswamy’s approach, asserting he had the “audacity” to run the ad, others voiced disapproval. South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace described it as “the most shameful, disgusting, offensive ad this election season,” emphasizing a loss of decency in political discourse.

Ramaswamy acknowledged the ad, expressing a desire for the campaign to focus on substantive issues but accused Acton of avoiding accountability. He argued that she misrepresented her past and actions during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as Ohio’s health director.

In response, Acton’s brother, Philip Stearns, released a statement condemning Ramaswamy, stating, “Shame on Vivek. It’s the contempt he has for Amy. It’s the contempt he has for Ohio. He’s not fit to lead.” This sentiment reflects growing concern among voters about the tone and tactics in the race, which could impact broader electoral dynamics in the state.

Ohio’s gubernatorial race is one of the most competitive in the country, particularly as Acton seeks to become the state’s first elected woman governor. Despite Ramaswamy’s controversial tactics, recent polls indicate Acton holds a narrow lead over him.
