Jannik Sinner Clinches Miami Open Title, Defeats Jiri Lehecka in Final

Miami, March 30: Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has won the Miami Open title, defeating Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the final. With this victory, Sinner has also completed the coveted ‘Sunshine Double.’

By beating Lehecka, Sinner becomes the first male player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season. Remarkably, he achieved this feat without dropping a single set in either tournament. At just 24 years old, Sinner secured his first Indian Wells title and became the eighth male player to accomplish the ‘Sunshine Double.’ This achievement has been previously attained by legends like Novak Djokovic and Federer.

The players who completed the ‘Sunshine Double’ before Sinner include Jim Courier (1991), Michael Chang (1992), Pete Sampras (1994), Marcelo Rios (1998), Andre Agassi (2001), Roger Federer (2005-06), and Novak Djokovic (2011, 2014-16). After this significant milestone, Sinner expressed his joy, stating, “This is something I never thought I would achieve, as it is quite difficult. I am extremely happy with this accomplishment.”

Sinner has also extended his impressive record by winning 34 consecutive sets at the ATP Masters 1000 level, a streak that began at last year’s Paris Masters. According to the ATP win/loss index, his record for this season stands at 19-2.

On Saturday, Aryna Sabalenka won the women’s Miami Open title, also completing her own ‘Sunshine Double.’ This marks only the fourth time in history that both ATP and WTA players have achieved the ‘Sunshine Double’ in the same year, with the first occurrence happening in 1994 when Sampras and Steffi Graf both triumphed at Indian Wells and Miami.

In 2005, Federer and Kim Clijsters achieved this special feat, while in 2016, Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka completed the ‘Sunshine Double.’ Currently, Sinner is 1,190 points behind Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP rankings. Meanwhile, 24-year-old Lehecka reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in this tournament.
