Jammu and Kashmir to Experience Rain and Snow from January 22 to 28

Jammu and Kashmir is set to witness varying intensities of rainfall and snowfall from January 22 to 28, according to the latest advisory issued by the meteorological department.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature at the Gulmarg ski resort dropped to minus 5.5 degrees Celsius. Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam saw minus 4.4 degrees, while Jammu and Katra reported minimum temperatures of 7.4 degrees Celsius. Other areas such as Batote registered 2.5 degrees, Banihal minus 1.6 degrees, and Bhaderwah minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.

Weather Advisory and Expected Impact

The meteorological department has forecasted the arrival of two western disturbances affecting Jammu and Kashmir during this period. These systems are expected to bring significant changes in weather conditions, including light to heavy rainfall and snowfall across the region.

The advisory warns that moderate to high-altitude areas may face disruptions in surface and air transportation. Key routes such as the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and other major roads could be impacted. Additionally, there is a risk of landslides, mudslides, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour.

Precautions for Residents and Travellers

Authorities have advised travellers, tourists, and transport operators to plan their journeys carefully in view of the anticipated adverse weather. Residents in snow-prone zones are urged to avoid slopes and avalanche-prone areas. Farmers have been cautioned to suspend activities like irrigation, fertilisation, and chemical spraying during this period.

Significance of Western Disturbances

The western disturbances are extratropical storms originating in the Mediterranean region that bring winter precipitation to northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent. Their activity significantly influences the rabi crop yield across India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh, including areas extending to northern Bangladesh and southeastern Nepal.

The meteorological department continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
