Jammu and Kashmir Revives Darbar Move Tradition to Serve Public Aspirations

Jammu and Kashmir reintroduces the Darbar Move tradition, aiming to align with public aspirations and enhance administrative efficiency.

Jammu, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : Abdul Rahim Rathar, the Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, announced on Monday that the government has decided to reinstate the ‘Darbar Move’ tradition in 2025, taking into account the desires and aspirations of the people. This marks a significant shift as the Jammu and Kashmir government resumes operations from Jammu starting Monday, a key aspect of the ‘Darbar Move.’

The ‘Darbar Move’ is a 154-year-old tradition where the Jammu and Kashmir government alternates its capital and administrative offices between Jammu and Srinagar twice a year. Initiated by the Dogra rulers in 1872, this practice was halted in 2021 under the administration led by the Lieutenant Governor. However, it was revived in October 2025 under the leadership of Omar Abdullah.

Speaking to reporters in the assembly chamber on the first day of the ‘Darbar Move’ in Jammu, Rathar emphasized that this tradition is not new. He acknowledged that while it was suspended for a time, it was resumed last year, allowing the government to serve the people of Jammu and Kashmir for six months. He assured that the same commitment will continue in Jammu.

Rathar reiterated that the ‘Darbar Move’ has been a longstanding tradition and its revival aligns with the public’s wishes. He expressed confidence that this age-old practice will continue to serve the people of both regions effectively.

Looking ahead, Rathar also expressed optimism about the smooth conduct of the upcoming budget session scheduled for early next year. With four decades of experience, he stated that managing legislative sessions presents no new challenges for him. He noted that during the previous budget session, representatives from all political parties, including the opposition, were given opportunities to voice their opinions and concerns, with many members expressing satisfaction with the proceedings.

Regarding the inclusion of four new ministers in the government, Rathar conveyed his expectations that both new and experienced ministers will work in accordance with the people’s desires and aspirations.
