Jammu and Kashmir experienced a sharp drop in temperature on Saturday, plunging several degrees below the freezing point. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.7 degrees Celsius, slightly warmer than the previous day’s minus 6 degrees.
The extreme cold caused the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar to partially freeze, creating difficulties for boatmen in navigating their boats. Additionally, taps, small potholes on roads, and shallow reservoirs also froze due to the low temperatures.
The temperature difference between the maximum and minimum in Srinagar has also narrowed, with Friday’s maximum temperature recorded at just 10.8 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has forecast cold and dry winds over the next few days, with little chance of rain or snowfall until January 20. Only higher altitude areas may see light snowfall during this period.
Concerns Over Dry Weather Amid Winter Season
The ongoing dry spell has raised concerns across Jammu and Kashmir. The region depends heavily on heavy snowfall to replenish its water sources, which are crucial for agriculture, horticulture, and drinking water. The 40-day harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ is when most snowfall occurs. Half of this period has already passed without any snowfall in the valley’s plains. Chillai Kalan will end on January 30, after which snow tends to melt quickly in February and March, limiting its contribution to permanent water reservoirs.
Temperature Variations Across the Region
Besides Srinagar, Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.8 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam saw minus 7.8 degrees Celsius. Jammu city’s nighttime low was 3.6 degrees, Katra 5.3 degrees, Batote 1.3 degrees, Banihal minus 0.4 degrees, and Bhaderwah minus 2.8 degrees.
Health Advisory Amid Freezing Cold
The severe cold and dry weather have led to a surge in patients with respiratory and heart ailments visiting hospitals and clinics. Medical experts have advised those with existing heart or chest conditions to take extra precautions. It is essential to wear warm clothes, keep the body fully covered, and take prescribed medications on time to avoid health complications during this cold spell.
