Meena Kumari remains an invaluable treasure of Indian cinema. Her films and poetry continue to inspire generations. Today, the entire film industry is paying homage to her memory.
The song “Piya Aiso Jiya Mein Samay Gayo Re” is from the film “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam,” sung by Geeta Dutt, with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni and music composed by Hemant Kumar.
She left an indelible mark on audiences with memorable performances in films like “Pakeezah,” “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam,” “Baiju Bawra,” and “Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan.” These films earned her critical acclaim and a massive fan following. Meena Kumari began her career at just four years old with “Leatherface” and gained recognition as a lead actress in 1946 with “Bachchon Ka Khel,” but it was “Baiju Bawra” (1952) that catapulted her to stardom. Her serious and sorrowful roles in films like “Parineeta,” “Sharda,” “Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai,” and “Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam” earned her the title of the first actress to win the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (1954 – Baiju Bawra).
Her husband Kamal Amrohi’s film “Pakeezah” is considered her most significant work, released just weeks before her passing.
