As the deadline to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) approaches, there are only a few days left for taxpayers to complete the process. However, the total number of ITRs filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 (Financial Year 2024-25) has not yet reached even 50% of last year’s total filings. For AY 2025-26, taxpayers will file returns for income earned during FY 2024-25. According to official records, over 9 crore income tax returns were filed last year for FY 2023-24.

Total ITRs Filed and Processed Till Date
As per data from the Income Tax Department’s website, a total of 3,67,94,801 ITRs have been filed as of August 25, 2025.
What is the Last Date for ITR Filing?
The government extended the deadline for ITR filing for AY 2025-26 in May this year. Taxpayers whose accounts do not require auditing can now file their ITR by 15 September 2025. This extension mostly covers salaried individuals. Previously, the deadline for filing ITR was 31 July 2025. Those whose accounts require auditing have until 31 October 2025 to meet their tax filing obligations.
Will the ITR Filing Deadline Be Extended?
A major question remains: Will the last date for ITR filing be extended further? Many taxpayers and tax professionals are hoping for at least one more extension, as the current deadline stands at 15 September. The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry has recently requested an extension, citing that under the present circumstances, taxpayers and chartered accountants may not be able to file returns on time. Several chartered accountants have echoed this concern. In a letter to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the Chamber highlighted various challenges faced by taxpayers and professionals.
