Rome, 25 January – Italy’s Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks accusing NATO allies of not fully supporting the United States during military operations in Afghanistan.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Meloni expressed Italy’s surprise at Trump’s comments, which suggested that NATO partners lagged behind in Afghanistan. She highlighted that such claims overlook the unprecedented unity shown by the alliance following the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001.
“After the 11 September 2001 attacks, NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in its history. This was an extraordinary demonstration of solidarity with the United States,” Meloni emphasised.
Underlining Italy’s immediate and ongoing military commitment, she noted that Rome deployed thousands of troops and led the Regional Command West, one of the most strategically significant areas in the NATO-led mission.
Meloni also recalled the heavy price paid by Italy during nearly two decades of involvement, citing the deaths of 53 Italian soldiers and over 700 wounded during combat, security, and training operations alongside Afghan forces.
The Prime Minister described statements that downplay NATO countries’ contributions in Afghanistan as unacceptable, especially when voiced by an allied nation. She further stressed that respect is essential in friendship, which forms the core of unity within the Atlantic alliance, reflecting the long-standing relationship between Rome and Washington.
These remarks came following Trump’s interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos on 22 January, where he criticised NATO allies. Trump claimed, “We never really needed them, never asked for anything. They say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, but they stayed back and away from the frontlines.”
He also expressed doubts about whether NATO would support the US if help was ever requested in the future.
