New Delhi: The second T20 match between India and New Zealand took place in Raipur on Friday, thrilling fans with some explosive batting performances. Former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Simon Doull praised India’s Ishan Kishan, saying the young batsman had a chance to score a big century but fell short.
Speaking on GeoStar, Simon Doull said, “Ishan played very well. He had the ability to score a big hundred. We know his potential and strength. He has shots all around the ground and scores runs at a rapid pace. He has already scored a double century in ODIs.”
He added, “Although India did not get a good start with early dismissals of Abhishek and Sanju, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav combined for an aggressive partnership that put pressure on New Zealand. Ishan’s attacking innings allowed Suryakumar to settle in, and India managed to turn the match in their favour.”
Simon Doull also highlighted some of Ishan’s remarkable shots during the game. “One of the best was when he went down on his knee to a Sodhi delivery and pulled the ball over mid-wicket. Regardless of match conditions, India maintained a fast scoring rate, which led to their success.”
This match marked Ishan Kishan’s return to the Indian team after a long gap, filling in for the injured Tilak Varma. There was considerable pressure on him to perform and secure his place. While he struggled in the first T20 in Nagpur, he made amends in Raipur by scoring a brisk 76 runs off 32 balls, including 4 sixes and 11 fours. He was dismissed on the first ball of the 10th over, when India needed 81 runs to win and he was just 24 runs short of a century.
Had Ishan played with more patience at that stage, he could have easily achieved his first T20 international hundred. Nevertheless, his innings played a key role in India’s victory.
Chasing a target of 209 set by New Zealand, India reached the target in 15.2 overs with 3 wickets down. Captain Suryakumar Yadav remained unbeaten on 82 off 37 balls, while Shivam Dube also contributed an unbeaten 36 runs from 18 balls. Ishan Kishan was awarded the Player of the Match for his impactful performance.
