New Delhi, May 9: The United States, in collaboration with Israel, launched a significant attack on Iran on February 28, resulting in the death of the then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Following this, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran. However, Mojtaba has yet to make a public appearance, leading to various speculations about his role and health. Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence suggests that the new Supreme Leader is playing a crucial role in formulating war strategies alongside senior Iranian officials.
According to reports from CNN citing sources within U.S. intelligence agencies, Mojtaba Khamenei is significantly involved in determining military strategies with senior officials. The current unstable power structure in Iran has left the distribution of authority unclear, but it is believed that Mojtaba may be guiding discussions aimed at negotiating an end to hostilities with the U.S.
Since being severely injured in the initial stages of the conflict, Mojtaba has not been seen publicly. This absence has fueled speculation regarding his health and his position within the Iranian leadership. Initially, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Mojtaba was injured in the attack and in critical condition.
Despite not being seen publicly, Mojtaba has reportedly made statements through indirect channels. U.S. media has indicated that one reason for the ongoing speculation is that Khamenei is not utilizing any electronic means for communication. Instead, he is either communicating in person or sending messages via courier.
Sources from U.S. media have reported that Khamenei remains isolated and is receiving medical treatment for his injuries. He has severe burn marks on parts of his body, affecting his face, hands, torso, and legs.
Mojtaba’s protocol chief, Majahar Hosseini, stated on Friday that Khamenei is recovering from his injuries and his condition is now stable. Hosseini noted that Khamenei has minor injuries to his legs and lower back, and a small piece of shrapnel lodged behind his ear, but the wounds are healing.
In a recent address to an assembly in Iran, Hosseini expressed gratitude, saying, “Thanks to the Almighty, he is doing well. The enemy is spreading all kinds of rumors and false claims. They want to see and find him, but people should remain patient and not rush. He will speak to you at the right time.”
Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian informed state media earlier this week that he had a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Khamenei. This was the first face-to-face meeting between a senior Iranian official and the new Supreme Leader.
U.S. media has reported that any information U.S. officials have regarding Khamenei’s condition has come through individuals in contact with him. However, intelligence analysts are questioning whether some within Iran’s power structure are claiming access to Khamenei to further their own agendas, potentially misusing his authority.
