Tehran, March 17: A recent US-Israel airstrike has caused significant damage to over 50 historical and culturally valuable sites in Iran. This information was confirmed by Iran’s Heritage Ministry.
According to the state news agency IRNA, a total of 56 sites have been affected, including 19 key locations in the capital, Tehran. Notable sites include the Golestan Palace, Tehran Bazaar, and the old Senate building.
Earlier reports indicated damage, but the full extent of the impact on Tehran’s buildings was not known until now.
The report also highlighted damage to several historical sites in the major industrial city of Isfahan. Portions of the famous Imam Shah Mosque, located at Naqsh-e Jahan Square, have been affected. This square is regarded as an exemplary representation of Safavid architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Isfahan, often referred to as ‘Half the World,’ is home to some of the most beautiful buildings globally. Reports indicate that the wooden pillars, doors, and other parts of this 17th-century historical palace have suffered severe damage. Images released by the agency show debris scattered inside and around the palace, broken windows, and fallen rubble.
As Iran’s third-largest city, Isfahan is recognized for its many sensitive establishments, including a nuclear research center, missile production facilities, a major oil refinery, and air force bases.
Isfahan is also a key center for Iran’s steel industry, with the Mubarak Steel Company being one of the largest steel producers in the Middle East. Additionally, the city hosts a significant air force base, reportedly housing Iran’s fleet of older American-made F-14 Tomcat fighter jets.
