Punjab Assembly Suspends Congress MLA Sukhpul Singh Khaira for Misconduct
Congress MLA Sukhpul Singh Khaira has been suspended from the Punjab Assembly for using offensive language during a session.

Chandigarh, October 23 (Daily Kiran) : Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Cheema introduced a motion in the Assembly on Friday seeking the suspension of Congress MLA Sukhpul Singh Khaira for the remainder of the ongoing session. Cheema accused Khaira of using objectionable and disrespectful language, disrespecting the authority of the chair, and deliberately obstructing the proceedings, which wasted valuable time and tarnished the dignity of the Assembly.
Addressing the Assembly, Cheema noted that many legislators had raised serious objections to the words used by Khaira. He emphasized that such language is a direct attack on the self-respect and dignity of the working class in Punjab, particularly the Scheduled Caste community.
Cheema highlighted the crucial role of the labor force in the state’s progress and prosperity. He asserted that it is the duty of every citizen, especially elected representatives, to protect the contributions and dignity of hardworking individuals.
He stated that it is unacceptable to insult any individual or community based on caste, social status, or economic background. Legislators are expected to act responsibly and maintain the decorum of the House, he added.
Furthermore, Cheema pointed out that representatives have a significant impact on society, thus they should refrain from making comments that could hurt the sentiments of any community. Efforts to eliminate caste discrimination and promote social equality have been ongoing, making the use of derogatory language against marginalized groups particularly unfortunate.
In discussing women’s economic empowerment, Cheema praised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for the government’s initiative to provide financial assistance of ₹1,500 and ₹1,000 monthly to eligible women, which aims to offer economic security and self-reliance to poor and needy women.
Cheema reiterated that any disrespectful behavior towards workers, the Dalit community, and other marginalized groups would not be tolerated. He also proposed a motion condemning the Congress party’s stance on the matter. The motion for Khaira’s suspension was later put to a vote and was unanimously passed by the Assembly Speaker.
