Iran Claims Three Tankers Crossed Hormuz Strait Amid Tracking System Shutdown

Tehran, May 11: Iran’s Tasnim News Agency has reported that the Maltese-flagged tanker Agios Fanorios-I has successfully crossed the Hormuz Strait. This vessel is one of three tankers that allegedly passed through the strait with their tracking systems turned off.

According to the report, the tanker was transporting Iraqi crude oil to Vietnam and utilized a maritime route suggested by Iran. The Iranian authorities have consistently monitored and controlled shipping movements in the Hormuz Strait.

Previously, Reuters cited shipping data from Kepler and LSEG, indicating that three oil tankers had crossed the Hormuz Strait after disabling their tracking systems. All three vessels were carrying crude oil through the region.

It is claimed that two very large crude carriers (VLCCs) — Agios Fanorios I and Kiara M — exited the strait on Sunday, each loaded with 2 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil. The Agios Fanorios I, heading to Vietnam, had previously failed to pass through the waterway on two occasions since loading Basra medium crude on April 17. Reuters noted that the destination of Kiara M remains unclear.

A third VLCC, Basra Energy, had loaded 2 million barrels of Upper Zakum crude from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated regarding the Hormuz Strait since the ceasefire, with calls from various countries to reopen it.

Meanwhile, Iran responded to a peace proposal sent by the U.S., which was subsequently rejected. Iran conveyed its response to the U.S. proposal regarding the ceasefire through Pakistan, but U.S. President Donald Trump labeled it “completely unacceptable.” However, Trump did not clarify which aspects of the proposal were deemed unacceptable by the U.S.
