Indore, 2 January. The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued notices to two officials following public interest litigations related to deaths and illnesses caused by contaminated drinking water in the industrial city of Indore.
Three public interest petitions were filed concerning the incident of contaminated water consumption that reportedly led to multiple deaths and several people falling ill. During the hearing, the state government submitted a status report. The court then directed notices to be sent to the Municipal Corporation Commissioner and the Additional Commissioner. The next hearing is scheduled for 6 January.
The incident occurred in the Bhagirathpura area, where contamination of drinking water has been linked to several fatalities. While the administration officially acknowledges only four deaths, local residents and political parties claim the number exceeds 14. The government’s status report also reiterated that the administration recognizes only four deaths so far.
In the upcoming hearing on 6 January, the administration is expected to present detailed figures on the deaths caused by contaminated water, as well as information on the number of people who have fallen ill and those admitted to ICU. The government has taken strict action by suspending three officials and has set up an inquiry committee regarding the Bhagirathpura water contamination deaths.
Meanwhile, opposition parties continue to put pressure on the government and the municipal corporation over the issue.
