New Delhi, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : India’s textile sector has reported impressive growth in exports for August 2026. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Textiles, total textile exports surged by 16.1% year-on-year, amounting to ₹29,776 crore during the month.
From April to August 2026, cumulative textile exports reached ₹1.43 lakh crore, reflecting a 10.3% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth was driven by several key textile categories. Notably, exports of cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups, and handloom products rose by 24.1% in August. Additionally, exports of man-made yarns, fabrics, and made-ups increased by 19.9%.
The carpet export sector also experienced a 15% growth, while exports of handicraft products (excluding handmade carpets) saw a remarkable increase of 41.4%. The Ministry noted that the export of all types of ready-made garments remained strong, with a 6.1% rise recorded in August.
During the cumulative period from April to August 2026, performance remained encouraging. Exports of cotton textiles grew by 18%, man-made textiles by 13.6%, carpets by 11.9%, and handicraft products by an impressive 44%.
The statement highlighted that the consistent growth across major categories showcases the increasing competitiveness and diversity of India’s textile exports. Enhanced market access, policy interventions, value addition, and efforts to expand into new markets have bolstered this sector.
Furthermore, the textile industry continues to play a crucial role in manufacturing, job creation, and contributing significantly to India’s overall exports. The completion of negotiations for the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in January 2026 is expected to provide a substantial boost to the Indian textile sector.
Under this agreement, Indian exports will benefit from preferential market access on 96.8% of tariff lines, covering 99.5% of India’s total exports. Once the agreement comes into effect, it is anticipated that 90.7% of India’s exports will be duty-free based on trade value.
