India’s Rapid Economic Growth Stands Out Amid Global Uncertainty: Kumar Mangalam Birla

New Delhi: Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, has highlighted India’s rapid economic progress as a rare and remarkable phenomenon in today’s unstable global environment. Speaking on Wednesday, he noted that India is demonstrating economic stability at a time when the world is witnessing significant political unrest, shifts in trade regulations, and evolving international relations.

In the seventh edition of his ‘Annual Reflection’ note, Birla described the global atmosphere as volatile but stressed that the Indian economy continues to show resilience and strength. He referred to this note as a personal exercise—an opportunity to pause and reflect on global changes, India’s economic rise, the journey of the Aditya Birla Group, and his long-term business experiences.

Birla observed, “Global politics no longer follow fixed rules but operate through continuous dialogues and agreements.” He explained that the world now functions like a geo-political marketplace, where partners in one sector, such as energy, might not collaborate in technology, and allies today may not share the same priorities tomorrow.

This complexity, Birla said, makes decision-making more challenging for both countries and businesses, with fewer predictable options available than before.

Despite these uncertainties, Birla underscored that India’s economic momentum remains robust and steady. He attributed this growth to the country’s vast population, rapid infrastructure development, increasing formalisation of the economy, and rising aspirations among people and businesses.

“In a world focused on large-scale business and deal-making, India offers scale, reliability, and consistency,” he added.

Reflecting on the Aditya Birla Group’s journey, Birla said the conglomerate has evolved not only as a beneficiary of India’s development but also as an active contributor. Its growth strategy has always been aligned with the progress of the nation it serves.

Birla also highlighted the significant rise in lending to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) over the last decade. He noted that while loans to MSMEs in India have tripled in this period, the Aditya Birla Group’s non-banking financial company (NBFC) loan book has expanded from around ₹17,000 crore to approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore.

This growth reflects the Group’s commitment to supporting the backbone of India’s economy and fostering inclusive development amid global challenges.
