Indias Net Direct Tax Collection Rises to ₹23.4 Lakh Crore in FY 2025-26

New Delhi, May 4: According to data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Monday, India’s net direct tax collection for the fiscal year 2025-26 has shown a steady increase of 5.12%, reaching ₹23,40,406 crore.

During this fiscal year, the gross direct tax collection amounted to ₹28,11,936 crore, which is a 4.03% rise compared to ₹27,03,107 crore in the previous fiscal year 2024-25.

This growth is attributed to improved collections from both corporate and non-corporate tax segments, reflecting stable economic activities and enhanced tax compliance.

Corporate tax collection saw a significant increase, rising to ₹13,81,606 crore from ₹12,72,542 crore in the previous fiscal year.

Non-corporate tax collection, which includes individual taxpayers, Hindu Undivided Families (HUF), firms, and other entities, stood at ₹13,72,474 crore, slightly lower than ₹13,73,905 crore in FY 2024-25.

Additionally, collections from the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) increased to ₹57,522 crore.

There was a minor decline in tax refunds issued during the fiscal year, decreasing by 1.09% to ₹4,71,531 crore from ₹4,76,732 crore the previous year.

The reduction in refunds has contributed to the growth in net tax collection, as a significant portion of the total collection remained with the government.

These figures indicate a balanced tax structure, where both corporate and individual taxpayers are making substantial contributions to revenue.

Analysts suggest that this steady increase in net tax collection reflects improved tax collection capacity and efficient administration, especially amid global economic uncertainties.

However, the slight decline in non-corporate tax collection may indicate fluctuations in personal income or trends in tax planning, while the rise in corporate tax suggests stable profits across various sectors.

Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department announced the figures on the social media platform X, stating, “As of March 31, 2026, the figures for gross direct tax collection, refunds, and net direct tax collection for FY 2025-26 have been released.”
