Indias Diplomatic Strategy: Balancing Energy Security and Migrant Interests Amid Middle East Conflicts

New Delhi, April 19: India’s interests in the ongoing conflicts in West Asia are crucial, particularly concerning the safety of Indian migrants and the nation’s energy security.

During this turmoil and regional crisis, India’s balanced and multi-directional diplomacy is not only wise but essential.

An expert noted in a column for the prominent portal ‘Modern Diplomacy’ that New Delhi has never directly intervened in the internal or regional matters of Gulf countries, nor has it openly supported any side. These nations have also refrained from pressuring India to abandon its multi-layered foreign policy, especially in this deeply divided regional atmosphere.

As the conflict escalates, India’s energy security has become a pivotal aspect of its foreign policy. The country heavily relies on Gulf nations for its substantial needs for crude oil and natural gas. Approximately 60% of crude oil and 50% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) comes from these countries, with the Strait of Hormuz playing a significant role.

The report also highlighted that the coordinated efforts between the Indian government and Iran, along with the Indian Navy’s careful actions under ‘Operation Energy Security,’ have ensured that over half of India’s commercial vessels can safely transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

India’s flagged LNG and PNG-carrying vessels were granted passage by Iran because it considers India a “friendly nation.” This is attributed to India’s diplomatic efforts and strategic balance.

High-level meetings and bilateral engagements with major energy suppliers like Qatar have further demonstrated India’s commitment to these key partnerships. These countries have assured India that they will continue to be reliable energy suppliers.

In today’s interconnected global landscape, where a crisis in one region can impact areas thousands of kilometers away, effective communication and active diplomatic engagement become vital. This proactive diplomacy from India has successfully created a win-win situation amid rising tensions in the Gulf region.
