New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced on October 8 that India has dramatically increased its broadband user base from 60 million to 1 billion over the past decade. Speaking at the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026, he hailed this growth as a historic change in the country’s digital landscape and expressed confidence that India is on track to lead in 6G technology.
Scindia highlighted that India now ranks among the countries offering the cheapest mobile data services globally, with the average cost of 1 GB of data around 8 rupees. He noted that reductions in data costs and increases in usage have empowered millions of Indians to connect, create, and innovate. According to him, digital connectivity has become a significant driver of social and economic transformation.
The minister emphasized that India aims not just to adopt technological standards but to set them in the future. He remarked, “We lagged in 4G, kept pace with 5G, and will lead in 6G.” Scindia credited the achievements of the past decade to the vision set forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014, which envisioned a connected, design-led, and technologically advanced India.
He also commemorated October 7 as a significant day in Indian history, marking 25 years of Modi’s leadership in public office, a milestone he described as a point of pride for the nation. Scindia praised Modi’s commitment to public service, encapsulated in the mantra “Work is Worship,” which has guided his responsibilities over the years.
Earlier that day, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the India Mobile Congress 2026. Scindia welcomed him to the event, which runs from October 7 to 10 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. The event is co-hosted by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
