Indian Students Tragic Death in Toronto Sparks Diplomatic Support

Ottawa, May 30: The Indian Consulate in Toronto expressed deep sorrow on Friday regarding the death of Indian student Vidhi Megha. The 23-year-old student passed away on May 15 in the Niagara area. The Indian Embassy has pledged full support and assistance to the bereaved family.

The Consulate shared their condolences on the social media platform X, stating, “We are deeply saddened to learn about the death of Vidhi Megha, an Indian international student in St. Catharines, Niagara. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the grieving family and stand in solidarity during this tragic loss.”

Furthermore, the Consulate mentioned, “We are in contact with family members in India and Canada, as well as the funeral home, providing all necessary assistance, including the repatriation of the remains to India.”

According to the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), officers in uniform responded to a report of two individuals being found unresponsive at a residence on Lakeshore Road and Lake Street in St. Catharines on May 15. Inside, they discovered the body of Vidhi Kalpeshkumar Megha, and the homicide unit has since taken over the investigation.

A male individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Back in Anand, Gujarat, Vidhi’s father spoke to a news agency on Thursday, stating, “She had been there for four years. I learned about her death from the local police station yesterday. I was informed that she had passed away, and I sent an official email to my relatives.”

He added, “An investigation has begun. A drug dealer came to collect money, got into a fight with her, and attacked her with a knife. I appeal to my government: please expedite the return of my daughter’s body to India.”

On May 18, NRPS detectives arrested 40-year-old Joshua Saint-Omer, charging him with second-degree murder.
