Indian Stock Markets Closed for Dussehra; MCX Trading Schedule Announced
Indian stock markets are closed today for Dussehra, while MCX will resume trading in the evening.

Mumbai, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : Indian stock markets are closed today in observance of Dussehra, which falls on October 20, 2026. As a result, trading on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is suspended. Both exchanges have marked Dussehra as a full trading holiday in their official 2026 calendar. Investors will not be able to buy or sell shares or engage in equity derivatives trading today.
This closure comes on the heels of a significant sell-off in the domestic market on Monday. The Nifty 50 index dropped nearly 257 points to close at 22,888.95, while the Sensex fell by 876.37 points to end at 73,852.90. The downturn affected nearly all sectoral indices, although the Nifty PSU Bank Index managed a 2.41% gain, standing out as an exception.
Due to the Dussehra holiday, trading will not occur in the equity segment or in the Futures and Options (F&O) market. Additionally, all sessions related to Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and interest rate derivatives are also closed.
Investors who actively trade in shares, derivatives, or currency markets will need to wait until the next business day to resume activities.
While the equity markets remain closed, trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will continue partially. The morning session will be closed from 9 AM to 5 PM, but commodity trading will restart at 5 PM. The evening session is expected to run until 11:30 PM or 11:55 PM, allowing investors to trade in gold, silver, crude oil, and other commodity futures.
Market experts note that even when the domestic stock market is closed, international markets continue to see fluctuations in commodity prices. Therefore, the MCX evening session provides investors with an opportunity to position themselves based on global developments.
It is crucial for commodity investors to pay close attention to the exchange’s trading hours and contract-related information.
Regular trading on the NSE and BSE will resume on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, allowing investors to buy and sell shares as usual.
Following Dussehra, three significant holidays remain this year for the stock market: Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24, and Christmas on December 25. On Diwali Balipratipada and Guru Nanak Jayanti, the morning session at MCX will be closed, but the evening session will remain open. The entire MCX trading will be halted on Christmas Day.
