Mumbai, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian stock market had a flat opening on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, as trading began for the week. Initial buying in IT and real estate stocks provided support to the major indices.
The Sensex opened up by 27.05 points, or 0.04%, at 71,951.73. Meanwhile, the Nifty managed a slight increase of 0.80 points, starting at 22,364.15. Shortly after, the market gained momentum, with the Sensex reaching a day’s high of 72,370.16, reflecting an increase of 445.48 points, or 0.61%, from the previous close of 71,924.68.
The Nifty 50 also saw positive movement, touching a day’s high of 22,523.65, which indicates a rise of 160.3 points, or 0.71%, from its last close of 22,363.35.
In broader market trends, the Nifty Midcap index rose by 0.3%, while the Nifty Smallcap index recorded a decline of 0.8%. Sectoral indices showed significant gains in Nifty IT, Nifty Midsmall IT & Telecom, and Nifty Realty, each climbing nearly 2%. Additionally, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty FMCG, and Nifty Oil and Gas gained 0.31%, 0.22%, and 0.20%, respectively.
Conversely, healthcare and pharmaceutical stocks faced selling pressure, with declines of up to 0.75% in indices like Nifty Midsmall Healthcare, Nifty 500 Healthcare, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Healthcare.
Market analysts suggest that the current trend of selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) is likely to continue. They point out that the U.S. 10-year bond yield remains above 5.2%, which may prompt FIIs to maintain their selling stance in the near term.
However, a record net investment of ₹38,307 crore in equity mutual funds in September has provided a strong foundation for domestic institutional investors, helping to offset the impact of foreign selling.
Experts also mentioned that with CPI inflation at 5.54%, food inflation at 7.74%, and Brent crude oil prices above $100 per barrel, the possibility of another interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India in December remains strong. This could support margins in the banking sector.
Technical analysts indicate that while the market’s recovery structure has weakened, Monday’s decline halted without breaking recent lows, leaving room for a short-term bounce. Analysts believe that for the Nifty to show strength, it needs to break above the 22,435 level; otherwise, it may slide toward the 22,070 to 21,900 range.
Meanwhile, Asian markets exhibited weakness as shares of AI-related companies faced pressure ahead of third-quarter earnings. The U.S. market closed lower on Monday, with the Nasdaq declining. Oil prices surged following an attack on an airport in Saudi Arabia, while investors awaited quarterly earnings from the banking sector and key economic data later in the week.
