Indian Stock Market Opens Flat Amid Selling Pressure in Metal and Energy Sectors

Mumbai, August 25: The Indian stock market opened flat on Tuesday. At 9:20 AM, the Sensex was down by 46 points or 0.06 percent, standing at 77,307, while the Nifty fell by 33 points or 0.14 percent to 24,196.

Selling pressure was primarily seen in the metal and auto stocks. The Nifty Metal and Nifty Auto indices were the top losers. Additionally, sectors like Nifty Energy, Nifty India Manufacturing, Nifty India Defense, Nifty PSU, Nifty Commodities, Nifty Healthcare, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Pharma, Nifty Oil and Gas, Nifty Realty, and Nifty Infra also traded in the red.

Conversely, only the Nifty Media and Nifty PSU Bank indices were in positive territory.

Both mid-cap and small-cap stocks also experienced selling, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index down by 34 points or 0.05 percent at 63,785, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index declining by 36 points or 0.18 percent to 19,890.

Among the gainers in the Sensex pack were Trent, Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel, Eternal, Titan, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, L&T, SBI, Tata Steel, and Indigo. On the losing side were HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Infosys, Power Grid, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, HUL, Asian Paints, TCS, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Sun Pharma, and M&M.

Most Asian markets were in the red, with Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Seoul also showing declines. Only Tokyo managed to remain in positive territory. The US stock markets closed mixed, with the Dow gaining 0.28 percent, while the technology index Nasdaq fell by 0.75 percent.

Experts noted that US sanctions on Iran and the threat of secondary sanctions on countries trading with Iran have created a new wave of uncertainty. Crude oil prices may remain elevated, which could hinder market momentum and lead to limited trading ranges.
