New Delhi, June 28: According to an official statement, the number of direct jobs created by recognized startups in India has risen to 2.36 million. This reflects a remarkable year-on-year growth of 36.1%.
Approximately 48% of all recognized startups have at least one female director or partner, showcasing the inclusive nature of India’s innovation-driven growth.
As of December 2025, the number of startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has exceeded 200,000, solidifying India’s position among the countries with the largest startup ecosystems globally.
The official statement highlighted that the country’s innovation framework has achieved its best performance to date. In the fiscal year 2025-26 alone, over 55,200 entities received DPIIT recognition, marking the highest growth in a single year since the program’s inception.
With the completion of 11 years of the Digital India program, this initiative has played a significant role in providing digital services to citizens on a large scale, as well as in building infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and advanced electronics for the future.
The statement noted, “In 2015, India ranked 81st in the Global Innovation Index, which improved to 38th in 2025. Currently, 223,000 recognized startups are driving innovation-based growth. Thus, the 11th anniversary of Digital India is not just an achievement but a strong foundation for India’s global technological leadership in the coming decade.”
In April 2026, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) completed ten years of transforming India’s financial system. During the fiscal year 2025-26, UPI recorded transactions worth ₹2.4162 trillion.
Today, UPI powers 81% of India’s digital payments and accounts for nearly 49% of global real-time digital transactions, establishing India as an undisputed global leader in real-time digital payments. UPI is now operational in several countries, and India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has been adopted by 23 nations through cooperation agreements.
Over the past year, India’s digital infrastructure has also strengthened continuously.
By March 2026, the number of broadband consumers in the country reached 1.0658 billion. Under the BharatNet project, high-speed broadband has been connected to 218,000 gram panchayats, extending digital connectivity to the remotest corners of rural India.
India’s 5G network has now reached 99.9% of districts, with 474,000 towers installed. Additionally, in February 2026, the inauguration of the National Data Center for the Northeast region in Guwahati further strengthened the region’s digital infrastructure and data sovereignty.
