
New Delhi, April 25: Vanshika Chaudhary and Chirag Sharma clinched the gold medal in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup held in Cairo, Egypt. This victory marks India’s fifth gold medal in the tournament.
The Indian team is currently leading the medal tally. They triumphed over the neutral athletes, Aliaksandra Piatrava and Mikita Daubash, who scored 467.6, while Vanshika and Chirag achieved a score of 484.3 to secure the gold. Another Indian duo, Mohini Singh and Himanshu Rana, won the bronze medal by scoring 407.4 in the four-team final.
Earlier on Saturday morning, Vanshika and Chirag scored a total of 582 at the Olympic International City Shooting Range, placing them at the top of the qualifiers among 14 teams. Mohini and Himanshu also performed well, finishing third with a score of 568. This is Vanshika’s second gold medal in the tournament; she previously won the women’s individual 10-meter air pistol title. For Chirag, this is his second medal as well, having previously secured a bronze in the junior men’s air pistol event.
The men’s and women’s trap shooting competitions concluded on the same day. One player from India reached the finals in each category. In the men’s event, Zuhair Khan performed admirably, scoring 115 and qualifying for the final in sixth place. Meanwhile, Bhavya Tripathi also reached the finals in the women’s category, scoring 108 after five rounds, finishing in sixth place.
However, Bhavya’s performance in the final was not as strong, and she ended up in eighth place in the junior women’s trap final. Italy’s Martina Montani excelled, winning the gold medal with a remarkable performance, hitting 26 out of 30 targets, while also setting a new junior world record.
In the men’s final, Zuhair finished in seventh place, while France’s Ege Thomas also set a junior world record score of 28 to claim victory. With the results from the Cairo Junior World Cup, India has now amassed a total of 14 medals, including 5 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
