Nagoya, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Quimsy D’Souza of India narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the women’s singles techball event at the Asian Games held in Nagoya on September 20. She faced a tough challenge against Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto, the world’s seventh-ranked player.
In a closely contested match, Quimsy fell behind in the opening set but made a valiant comeback. Despite her efforts, she could not convert her resurgence into a victory. Sakamoto maintained her composure and clinched the set 12-11.
Quimsy struggled initially, trailing 3-6 and later 7-9. However, she rallied to take a lead of 11-10. Unfortunately, Sakamoto equalized and then secured the final point to win the set.
The Indian athlete started the second set on a strong note, seemingly poised for a decisive set. She built a 6-3 lead and later went ahead 10-7. Yet again, Sakamoto’s experience shone through.
The Japanese player gradually chipped away at Quimsy’s lead, employing a variety of clever shots to apply pressure. Eventually, she leveled the score at 10-10 and then took the lead to secure the bronze medal.
The match was also marked by several unusual interruptions, as points had to be replayed due to edge balls. In techball, an edge ball occurs when the ball strikes the curved edge of the table, necessitating a replay of the point.
Though Quimsy’s singles campaign ended without a medal, her journey in the Asian Games is not over yet. She will have another opportunity to reach the podium when she teams up with Mohammad Anas Imran Beg in the mixed doubles bronze medal match. The Indian duo will face Vietnam’s Hoang Minh Tan Nguyen and Jia Nghia Trinh.
Quimsy is now focused on the upcoming mixed doubles match, aiming to secure a medal in her Asian Games debut alongside her partner.
