New Delhi, April 20: The central government has granted approval for the export of an additional 2.5 million metric tons (MMT) of wheat. An official statement released on Monday indicates that this decision aims to secure better prices for farmers and maintain stability in the domestic market.
According to the statement from the Department of Food and Public Distribution, this decision was made after a comprehensive review of production, available stocks, and price trends.
The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare had previously released a second advance estimate on March 10, 2026, projecting wheat production for 2025-26 at 120.2 million metric tons (MMT). The statement noted that given the good production and sufficient stocks, allowing additional exports was deemed appropriate.
Earlier, the Department of Food and Public Distribution approved the export of 5 MMT of wheat products in January 2026. This was followed by another approval in February 2026 for 5 MMT of wheat products and 2.5 MMT of wheat. With the latest approval, the total exports permitted now stand at 5 MMT of wheat products and 10 MMT of wheat.
During the Rabi 2026 season, the area under wheat cultivation has increased to approximately 3.34 million hectares, up from 3.28 million hectares last year. This rise reflects farmers’ confidence, supported by the minimum support price (MSP) and a robust procurement system, indicating a good harvest this year.
The approval for an additional 2.5 MMT of wheat exports is expected to enhance market liquidity, improve storage management, and help farmers avoid selling at lower prices during harvest time. This will aid in stabilizing domestic prices and increasing farmers’ income while ensuring the country’s food security remains intact.
The government stated that it will continue to make such decisions periodically to balance the interests of both farmers and consumers while promoting sustainable development in the agricultural sector.
