Indian Army Embarks on Electric Vehicle Expedition in the Himalayas

New Delhi, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian Army has initiated a groundbreaking expedition to test the capabilities of electric vehicles in the challenging terrains of the Himalayas. This journey, which began on October 12, 2026, will take a team from Delhi to Mana, the last village in India, before heading towards the northeastern region.

As part of the expedition, the team will traverse high-altitude passes, including Nathu La and Bum La, which rise over 4,500 meters above sea level. The extreme conditions of low temperatures, steep climbs, and rugged geography will provide a unique opportunity to evaluate the performance of electric vehicles.

General Dheeraj Seth, the Army Chief, flagged off the “Stallions Pan-Himalayan EV Riders Expedition” (SPEAR) from the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi. The expedition covers approximately 4,850 kilometers, passing through diverse geographical areas of the Himalayas, the plains of the Ganges, and northeastern India.

This initiative aims to promote eco-friendly transportation, technological innovation, and adventure activities while paying tribute to the soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. The journey will first lead participants to Mana village in Uttarakhand, after which the team will proceed eastward through the plains of Uttar Pradesh, entering the rugged regions of the Himalayas.

The expedition is set to conclude on November 16, 2026, at the Walong War Memorial in Arunachal Pradesh, coinciding with Walong Day. A key goal of this campaign is to assess the reliability of electric vehicles on difficult mountain roads and at high altitudes. The performance, endurance, and practicality of these vehicles will be rigorously tested during the long-distance journey.

The Indian Army will leverage its operational expertise alongside the technical know-how of partner companies to gain insights into the viability of electric vehicles in challenging conditions. This initiative is not only focused on environmental conservation but also seeks to explore new transportation options and the potential for emerging technologies in remote areas.
