New Delhi is gearing up to host the second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on January 31, bringing together foreign ministers from numerous Arab countries. This high-level gathering aims to strengthen cooperation and chart a new direction for partnerships between India and the Arab world.
On Thursday, foreign ministers from Comoros, Palestine, and Sudan arrived in the capital. Comoros’ Foreign Minister Mabe Mohammad, Palestine’s Foreign Minister Warsen Agabekian Shaheen, and Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mohiuddin Salim Ahmed Ibrahim were warmly welcomed by the Ministry of External Affairs. The ministry highlighted that such visits deepen bilateral relations and enhance people-to-people contacts.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that India is hosting this important meeting for the first time, co-chaired by India and the United Arab Emirates. The event will see participation from foreign ministers of all Arab League member states, along with the Secretary-General of the Arab League.
This meeting marks the first in nearly a decade, following the inaugural India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Bahrain in 2016. At that time, five key areas were identified for collaboration — economy, energy, education, media, and culture — with a roadmap developed for joint initiatives in these fields.
India holds observer status in the League of Arab States, which comprises 22 member countries. The current meeting in New Delhi will include representatives at various levels, such as foreign ministers, other ministers, state ministers, and senior officials from all 22 Arab nations. Ahead of the main meeting, a fourth India-Arab Senior Officials Meeting is scheduled for January 30.
As the highest institutional platform between India and the Arab world, this meeting underscores the longstanding partnership that formally began in March 2002 with a Memorandum of Understanding to institutionalise regular dialogue. The Ministry of External Affairs also recalled the 2008 visit of then Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa to India, during which a cooperation framework was signed to establish the Arab-India Cooperation Forum, later revised structurally in 2013.
Earlier this week, the Ministry informed that 20 countries have confirmed participation of their foreign ministers and senior officials in both the 2026 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the Senior Officials Meeting.
This significant diplomatic event reflects India’s ongoing commitment to deepening ties with the Arab world and advancing collaborative efforts across multiple sectors.
