Washington, January 28: The tariff-based strategy of the Trump administration has failed to yield significant results, with India overtaking the United States in trade agreements, raising concerns in Washington. According to Henrietta Treyz, co-founder of Veda Partners, India has signed more trade deals this year than the US, marking a notable shift in global trade dynamics.
In an interview with CNBC, Treyz highlighted the turmoil in Washington over India’s trade progress. “There is an uproar in Washington because India has signed more than twice the number of trade agreements compared to what Donald Trump’s administration managed this year,” she said.
Treyz pointed out growing frustration among US lawmakers, noting that aggressive trade rhetoric from the Trump government has not translated into concrete agreements. “If you recall, when Treasury Secretary Scott Baesent and USTR James Greer were in office, Trump promised 90 trade deals within 90 days. The actual results have fallen far short of these expectations. In 10 months, we have only two deals, with Cambodia and Malaysia,” she explained.
She added that the South Korea deal has stalled, a situation particularly troubling for US legislators. Treyz remarked, “Before this government, 96 percent of trade with South Korea was covered under a free trade agreement with zero tariffs on our side.”
According to her, the use of tariffs as a pressure tactic has not succeeded in securing agreements with key partners. The heavy-handed approach Trump took against the EU, Japan, and South Korea has failed to deliver benefits.
Treyz also noted strong opposition to tariffs within the US, stating, “Fifty percent of Americans want the Supreme Court to eliminate tariffs. This opposition complicates the government’s economic messaging and has stalled trade agreements, causing increasing concern.”
She emphasized that the White House faces significant political pressure to address these issues. President Trump aims to reassure voters about the US economy, but the ongoing trade policy challenges and stalled deals are affecting public and Republican conference approval ratings nationwide.
While the Trump administration promotes an ‘America-first’ approach to economic engagement, Treyz warned that ignoring the political impact of stalled trade growth will become increasingly difficult.
