India Strengthens Trade Front Against Trump Tariffs, Experts Praise Modi's Diplomacy

New Delhi: The recent trade agreement between India and the United States is being hailed by former diplomats and experts as a significant diplomatic victory under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Former diplomat J.K. Tripathi highlighted that within a year, India has diversified its exports and mounted a strong front against the Trump-era tariffs.

Speaking about the India-US trade deal, J.K. Tripathi said, “The tariffs removed by Trump were imposed out of compulsion. Over the past year, especially in the last six months, our efforts against these tariffs have caused concern in the US administration. Earlier last year, we secured trade deals with EFTA, followed by agreements with the UK, Germany, and the EU. This collective effort helped us counter the tariffs and additional charges imposed by the Trump government effectively, leading to diversification of our exports.”

He further added, “The Trump administration realized that failing to reach a trade agreement would leave them at a disadvantage because India’s market represents 1.4 billion people. Therefore, they hastily agreed to the trade deal, although they are making various claims that the decision was influenced by Prime Minister Modi.”

On the India-US trade agreement, BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha described it as “a historic moment.” He stated, “India and the United States are two of the world’s largest democratic powers, together accounting for nearly two billion people. Such a trade agreement will have a significant impact on global trade, and we expect very positive and beneficial outcomes.”

BJP MP Kangana Ranaut remarked, “Our initial deal with Europe, termed the ‘Mother of all Deals,’ surprised the world. Today, we have excellent news that under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ initiatives, products made in India, which form an important part of the economy, will benefit greatly. Our tariffs have been set at 18 percent, which is much lower compared to other countries. I must credit the Prime Minister’s patience, diplomacy, and vision, which are highly commendable.”
