
New Delhi, February 20: India expressed optimism on Friday regarding the strengthening of multifaceted bilateral relations with Bangladesh following the formation of a new government led by Tarique Rahman. Comprehensive discussions on all aspects of the relationship are anticipated.
During a weekly media briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “After the elections in Bangladesh, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. On February 17, during the oath-taking ceremony, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented the Indian government and handed over a letter from our Prime Minister to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister.”
He further noted that the Lok Sabha Speaker also held a bilateral meeting with the Bangladeshi Prime Minister. Jaiswal added, “We look forward to strengthening our multifaceted relations with Bangladesh while advancing our historic and warm ties. We are eager to engage with the new government and discuss all aspects of our bilateral relations, including visa matters.”
Earlier this week, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla attended the oath-taking ceremony of the new government in Dhaka. He expressed on the social media platform X, “I was pleased to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new government of Bangladesh under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka. India is ready to extend all possible support to Bangladesh in building a democratic, progressive, and inclusive nation.”
During the meeting, Birla congratulated Tarique Rahman on assuming office and extended an invitation to visit India. Both leaders expressed optimism about working together for the welfare of the people of India and Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, also shared a statement on X, indicating that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman conveyed his best wishes to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He mentioned that both sides committed to moving forward under a people-centered cooperation agenda.
Tarique Rahman, the chairman of the BNP, recently took the oath as the 11th Prime Minister of Bangladesh after his party’s decisive victory in the 13th parliamentary elections.
